Independent product based on Status Trio
A SMALL HOME FOR THE EVERYDAY
Glance app iconLess clutter. More at a glance.

It started with one extra feature.

I came across Status Trio in a tool recommendation video and immediately liked the idea of combining status information into one menu-bar icon. I wanted a simpler menu bar on my own Mac.

At first, I only planned to contribute a hotspot feature. As I changed the interface and added more functions, the project developed its own direction. I rebranded it as Glance and continued shaping it into an independent product, based on the original Status Trio project.

Bring more together. Keep it simple.

The goal is to replace more of the small utilities scattered across my menu bar with one place for the things I use every day. The interface matters as much to me as the list of features: it should feel calm, clear and at home on a Mac.

Customisable controls keep frequently used actions close, without making every option compete for attention.

Useful at a glance

Weather, system information and everyday controls share a compact, consistent interface.

Yes, even the MagSafe light.

One of my favourite details is the ability to turn off the MagSafe indicator light. It’s a small thing, but it bothered me—and being able to improve my own daily experience is a big part of why I make things.

My contribution centres on the product direction, interface and feature decisions, reviewing the result, and iterating on the experience. Maintaining a released app also means thinking about the path from a change on my Mac to an update on someone else’s.

WHAT I CARE ABOUT

A feature earns its place when it makes the everyday experience simpler. That is the question I keep returning to as Glance grows.

A release is more than a downloadable app.

The problem. Shipping an update means keeping the app, download and update feed consistent. A development build or an older build number should not accidentally become a public update.

The approach. Glance’s release script separates development and production identities, rejects a build number that does not advance the update feed, and requires signed Sparkle updates for publication. Production packaging includes signing, notarisation and verification steps.

The trade-off. These checks add setup and maintenance work. They catch packaging mistakes before publication, but distribution still depends on users being able to reach the hosting service.

The result. Glance has a public v2.0.3 release. The release workflow is part of maintaining it beyond my own Mac.

My role and AI assistance

I drive product direction, interface and feature decisions, review the app and iterate on the experience. Implementation and release tooling have used AI assistance. The workflow above describes the project’s safeguards; it is not a claim that I authored every part independently.
